Port Newark Container Terminal (PNCT) Expansion

The multi-phase project has consisted of the redevelopment of the PNCT Complex to increase the capacity and productivity of the cargo handling operations.
SESI’s tenure at PNCT reaches back over 12 years, with the firm’s involvement in numerous projects such as the PNCT Phase 1 Expansion, PNCT Phase 2 Expansion, the PNCT Phase 3 Expansion, and a variety of additional interim projects that have been completed around the PNCT complex since 2011. SESI’s services have included the following:
Phase 1 Expansion
- SESI provided Geotechnical engineering services and geotechnical instrumentation installation/monitoring for the original Phase 1 Expansion
- SESI provided Environmental Engineering Services for the characterization and management of the remaining surcharge materials from the Phase 1 Expansion
Phase 2 Expansion
- SESI provided Site Civil engineering support related to the photogrammetric survey, existing utility plan consolidation, and redevelopment strategy to support the original bid for the original Phase II Expansion
- SESI provided Geotechnical engineering services for the Phase 2 Expansion
- SESI provided additional Site Civil engineering support related to supplemental ground surveys around the Phase 2 Expansion area
- SESI provided limited Construction Observation Services for Phase 2 Expansion.
Phase 3 Expansion
- SESI provided Geotechnical engineering services for the Phase 3 Expansion
- SESI provided Environmental engineering services for the Phase 3 Expansion
Marsh Street Expansion
- SESI provided Geotechnical engineering services, solutions, and monitoring to address the Marsh Street train line shear failure resulting from the stockpiling of surcharge materials
- SESI provided Site Civil engineering support for the Marsh Street expansion
- SESI provided Geotechnical and environmental engineering support services during the Marsh Street redevelopment
Solar Array Work (Ongoing)
- SESI provided engineering services related to the pile design and site preparation procedures for the multiple solar arrays around the complex.
- SESI is currently providing additional geotechnical and environmental engineering consulting services throughout the solar installation work.
- SESI is currently providing construction observation services for all of the solar array installations.
Interim Project Work
- SESI provided Environmental engineering services related to the remaining RCA and soils at the Site and assisted PNCT in identifying low-cost solutions for material disposal leftover from the Phase I, Phase II, and Phase III Expansions.
- SESI provided Geotechnical engineering services for the central Reefer Rack system prior to the Phase II Expansion
- SESI provided Geotechnical engineering services for the OCR Building during the Phase II expansion
- SESI provided Geotechnical engineering services/Value engineering to remove piles from the Site Substation in the Phase II expansion and the design of compensated foundation design to place the substation on geofoam
- SESI provided Geotechnical engineering services for the Strad Access Platform
